科学美国人杂志第八期以Running out of water作为主打文章，提出As demand for freshwater soars, planetary supplies are becoming unpredictable. Existing technologies could avert a global water crisis, but they must be implemented soon。

下面是《环球科学》的第九期跟《Scientific American》第八期的封面

6月22-7月11号之间我参加了summerschools on dynamical mean-field theory，International Workshop on First Principle Methods for Strongly Correlated Materials，以及International Symposium on the multiscale modeling and simulation of materials。经历了很多好玩的事儿，碰见很多好玩儿的人。

22号大半夜抵达青岛流亭机场，这是我第二次到青岛。打车走了很远才到市区，一路上都是工程车，出租车司机对于青岛举办帆船赛感到非常的自豪。找了个四星的宾馆住下，等我洗澡的时候发现马桶不能冲水，浴缸没有垫子，极度郁闷。但是第二天早上起床发现我住的地方周围真是很漂亮，顿时所有的不快一扫而空。

中午饭之后到长途汽车站坐车到威海，如前所述，威海的确是个漂亮的城市，但是也秉承着北方城市的特点，东西南北，主干与次枝分得极为清楚。会议地点在山东大学威海分校，简单的讲，这个学校非常漂亮。从其中一个门出去就是海滩，在这个海滩上我狠狠地沙滩浴了半个月，另一个方向是天文台，前面提到的那张照片就是站在天文台的地方照的，但是比较遗憾的是，这个天文台似乎有点小。学校总体感觉很好，建筑非常气派。不知是否是缺乏举办国际性学术会议的经验，还是其它的原因，会议组织不太好，甚至连投影仪比我实验室的还差。另外，食堂似乎也有点说不过去，分量十足，味道不好，说起来土豆白菜一个味道。

另外，去刘公岛玩儿了一下，这个地方是我国北洋舰队的发源地，记载这我们屈辱的近代史。

会议结束之后，途经烟台至上海，在复旦大学见到了大名鼎鼎的S.Baroni，此尊有点政治化，但是很符合我们的国情，不愧是ICTP的高人。还有一个Prof.说英语有卡带的感觉。总体上讲，这个会议给人留下的是愉快的回忆。在此录下几句很有意思的话：

自组织系统中雪崩的预言：arXiv:0808.0623

 It is a common belief that power-law distributed avalanches are inherently unpredictable. This idea affects phenomena as diverse as evolution, earthquakes, superconducting vortices, stock markets, etc; from atomic to social scales. It mainly comes from the concept of “Self-organized criticality” (SOC), where criticality is interpreted in the way that at any moment, any small avalanche can eventually cascade into a large event. Nevertheless, this work demonstrates experimentally the possibility of avalanche prediction in the classical paradigm of SOC: a sandpile. By knowing the position of every grain in a two-dimensional pile, avalanches of moving grains follow a distinct power-law distribution. Large avalanches, although uncorrelated, are preceded by continuous, detectable variations in the internal structure of the pile that are monitored in order to achieve prediction.

威海是个很漂亮的海滨城市，以后有机会要常去。

中国科技大学管理学院吴强教授提出了w-指数，试图来代替目前的h-指数，文章暂时贴在arxiv上面：arxiv:0805.4650. 世界变化真是很快，恐怕很多人还在迷恋影响因子，据我所知，知道h指数的人目前并不是很多，w指数又出来了。physicsworld报导了这件事情。

H指数是2005年康奈尔大学J. E. Hirsch教授提出来的，简单的讲，这个值就是一个科学家拥有的大于某一个值的文章的数目，而这个值要跟文章数相等，比如一个科学家有10篇他引次数大于10的文章，那么他的h-指数就是10. 但是很明显，它在评价科学家学术论文综合影响力时存在一定的偏差，对一些文章少但是每篇都有很高引用率的科学家不利。而W指数在继承H指数简洁易懂特点的同时，更关注高引用次数的论文，能更准确地反映出一个科学家代表作的综合影响力，而且减少了一定量的信息挖掘时间。

John Archibald Wheeler （惠勒）同志去世了，一时不知道该写点什么。他一直是属于将画像挂在墙上让我瞻仰的物理学家。正是这一类物理学家让我们感觉到什么叫才气从横。

关于惠勒离我本人非常遥远，只读过他的一本叫《引力》的书，将其封面发上来。以此纪念吧！
